IN THE LAND OF WHAT SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED

IN THE LAND OF WHAT SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED

It is with inconceivable sorrow
that we must rise to another day
in this quarry of blood and of bone and of steel
in the land of what should not have happened.

Here we stand with our backs to the wall
in a line as we listen for our numbers
in this pit of consigned and condemned and bereft
in the land of what should never have happened.

As we sit in the smoke of the yard
we all look at each other and wonder
with our unaddressed needs and unspeakable deeds
in the land of what should not have happened.
